Loving Vincent: a film made by paintings

Loving Vincent is the first feature length painted animation with every single shot painted on a canvas just as if Vincent had painted them himself. After watching the trailer I am blown away with the time and intricacy that must be involved in this process. In the same way that I'm trying to materialise the Saints, these 30 painters who worked on this film are trying to do the same with Van Gough. Using a series of 56,800 paintings they have brought his work and his life to the 21st century. The whole process seems so personal and intricate as if these painters are completely devoted to Vincent as he is an iconic figure. Perhaps this film is a form of worship for fans of Vincent? Is worship exclusive to religion?

I think that I could potentially try something like this in my project, on a smaller scale of course. I could use my phenakistoscope idea to do paintings of a selection of saints, and bring them back to life from their remains as a relic. The process could be quite a beautiful way to materialise the saints. Using oil paints, a traditional method of documentation, I could juxtopose this with the modern idea of animation. Transitioning from death to life, or life to death, is an endless cycle, the only certainty in life. I think this circle of paintings could be seen as both graceful and gruesome as the relic is quickly whipping through its life into a decayed body part.
