Maurizio Cattelan

Juxtaposing humour with religion is one of the riskiest combinations. This piece by Cattelan is certainly one of the more controversial sculptures I have seen. It depicts Pope John Paul II being struck by a meteor. This is quite a statement; perhaps it is being suggested that even the pope isn't indestructible OR that the meteor was an act of God. Although the pope is seen as an idestructable and untouchable figure he is still just as vulnerable as the rest of us. This is a rather graphic way to represent the fragility of the iconic.

My work could also be a statement on the fragility of religious icons as I am focused on relics and also the processes that the relics have been through. I could look at the decay of the relics, or in reverse rather. The relics that remain tell quite a gruesome story about the death of the Saint, this could be displayed as a process, from life to death to relic. I could take this to a topical political level and create a relic for Donald trump and guess what he'd have left behind as a relic, perhaps his tiny hands?
