Hanging Saint Thomas sculptures
Using some hooks attached to the top of my studio space, I began trying to hang my little sculptures from fishing wire in the hopes of making them appear as if floating. This idea is mostly inspired by the impressively intricate works by Kris Kuksi. The plan is to have ethereal looking relics floating with transcendence.
I attached a black piece of card to the wall to give the sculptures a more ambiguous background.
Using strong tape, I attached the fishing wire to the back of each relic.
Once the finger was attached from above, I realised that it started spinning uncontrollably. This was quite an interesting sights as these 4 fingers were spinning on there own, almost like an animation/kinetic sculpture. But I wished to photograph them first, so had to attach wire to the bottom of each sculpture to stop the spinning.
This did work, however, it was extremely difficult to get all of the fingers lined up. I tried pulling each wire taught and attached them at the same points, but as I did this the wire would snap or detach.
I resorted to attaching a more substantial wire to the back of each finger to make them all the same distance from the wall. This seemed to work at first, but when I left for a few minutes, they had fallen down. I had to find another way in which to make the sculptures appear as if floating. I have booked a slot with Alan in the photography studio to get help with this effect.
