Phenakistascope: Donald Trump
Still sticking with the zoetrope idea, I thought I'd move onto something a tad easier/less time consuming; a 2D zoetrope! This meant be free to draw any design I like without having to sculpt it from scratch, and I can easily replicate them to be identical (using tracing paper).
I drew out my first Donald Trump then traced over it with tracing paper and moved the same drawing over to the next segment, only changing the position of the arm. The idea is that the arm will move up and down like a pointing finger.
I wanted to encorporate other elements into the animation, as an experiment, so I added the crown and the globe. By moving the crown slightly higher and higher in each frame, I was able to create the effect of a crown bouncing up and down; this is making a comment on Trump impending presidency.
The globe in the middle is gradually decays; a comment on the state of the world if he comes into power. Donald Trumps stumpy fingers could be in reach of the nuclear bomb button.
The final animation looks quite nice and fluid with all the components moving how I had hoped. I wanted the piece to be fairly humorous whilst touching on a topical subject. I think that I have achieved this. The only criticism I have is that it isn't clearly religious enough; the only religious denotation on the piece is the stainglass window-esque design around Trumps head; like the image below. I think it would be quite effective to make a stainglass window containing some kind of Trump narrative.
