The making of
I began by taking a lump of clay and using my sculpting tools to create the first peice, the corner. The aim is to have all pieces fit together perfectly, so I put a straight edge on the corner.
The next step was to spray paint the piece, I chose 'ancient white'. It completely alters the appearance of the clay giving an almost marble or ivory effect.
I then greased the piece with baby oil, then mixed up a small batch of alginate to pour on top. This dried within 4 minutes and when pulled off created a perfect negative impression.
I poured some plaster of Paris into the mould and let this set for 20 minutes.
I then popped this plaster cast out of the mould and we have an identical cast. This process was repeated a further 2 times, resulting in 3 identical copies of the original.
Next, I sprayed the copies with the ancient white paint, however they looked too pale in comparison with the original. To correct this I painted brown and black into the creases then added another coat of the spray paint.
